May 8, 2009
The meeting of the SaddleBrooke Democratic Club was called to order by Chair Elizabeth Hess at 3:05 pm.
Approval of April Minutes: It was M/S/C to approve the minutes as presented.
Treasurer’s Report: Mark Griffith indicated the full Financial Statement was available to all. He also announced that dues notices had been mailed for the year 2009. M/S/C to approve the Treasurer’s Report.
New Business: Elizabeth announced that there will be no speaker in June but a potluck will be held at Connie and Vic Martin’s home. Today’s potluck will be at Jan and Ted Simon’s home. We’re planning a social gathering at the SaddleBrooke Clubhouse the first or second Tuesday in August. We will not pay in advance but order from the menu. Also a picnic/silent auction is being planned for October 3 at Catalina State Park to raise money for Democrats running in 2010 elections. The cost to attend the picnic/silent auction is expected to be $15. A flyer was available with ideas for participation in the
fund raiser.
Elizabeth also introduced our two new members Barb and Ted Sakaro.
Mark had attended the Democrat Party meeting session held that morning and told us that candidates are surfacing. He named Jason Williams and Penny Kotterman running Superintendent of Public Instruction and Sam Warcinski running for Secretary of State to replace Jan Brewer. Further it is expected that Terry Goddard and Jim Pederson (who was defeated in his 2006 race against John Kyl) will run for Governor and Vince Robago, a deputy prosecutor and Pima County Chairman, will run for the Attorney General seat.
Also from the Democrat Party meeting: Raul Grijalva reported that a letter with 110 signatures by members of the US Progressive Caucus, the Hispanic Caucus and Labor Caucus has been sent to President Obama. They state that unless health care reform includes a public health care option they will not support it.
LD 26 Announcements: Carolyn Badger announced that CARE, Concerned Arizona Residents for Education, was founded in February and now has 1500 members. Its founders live in LD 26. CARE’s purpose is to inform its members and help them take actions in SUPPORT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION. CARE sends members a weekly legislative update with talking points and suggestions for actions. The group is non-partisan and there are no dues or meetings. To join, go to HYPERLINK “http://www.azcare.info” www.azcare.info.
There being no old business, the meeting adjourned.
