Saddlebrooke Democratic Club Minutes

April 12, 2011

 

The meeting of the Saddlebrooke Democratic Club was called to order by Chair, Holly Lyon at 4:00 p.m.

 

Secretary’s Report:

Betty Jacob reviewed highlights of the February and March meetings.  Vote was taken and minutes were accepted.

 

Treasurer’s Report:

Sue Ayers reported $1510.00 in dues has been received so far this year.  Balance in the treasury is $5,075.00.  Very few expenses incurred so far in 2011.

 

At this point Holly introduced guests from Saddlebrooke Ranch, the Oro Valley Democratic Club and other visitors.

 

Social Committee Report:

Susan Shear announced that following the May 17th meeting there would be an ice cream social and light dinner.

Susan wants to recruit volunteers to plan and train for the “it’s the framing, stupid” workshop in the fall.

On July 12th there will be a readers’ theater and dessert meeting.

In the fall Susan is planning a wine and cheese event targeted for Independents as well as Democrats.

The holiday party is scheduled for January 15th at the Mountain View ballroom.

Plans in place for Susan’s husband to facilitate a discussion group on his book during the summer.

 

Membership Committee:

Carolyn Badger announced the club has 116 paid members.  Only 10% of Saddlebrooke Democrats have joined.  Our peak membership was 230 in 2008.

Carolyn introduced new members to the group.

Carolyn called for more members to join the Demo Dames Bridge Club.

Vice Chair Report:

Joe Robison reported that the state Democratic Party provides an incentive plan for Pinal County Democratic Club to get more people on the vote-by-mail list.  They will give $5.00 for every new Democrat on the list.  There will be a Wednesday workday to call registered Democrats to get on the list.  The goal is to have 50% of that group on the list.

Joe announced that there are 10 raffle tickets remaining for the flat screen television.  The Pinal County Democratic Club even sponsors this.

Joe announced that on September 23rd the Pinal County Democratic Club annual dinner would be held at The Property in Casa Grande.

Chairperson’s Report:

Holly Lyon reported that on April 8th Cheryl Cage and approximately 25 volunteers picketed the Legislative District 25 forum held at the YMCA.  The session topics were covered only in a very broad and general sense.  Al Melvin and Vic Williams did not take any questions, and Rep. Terri Proud did not attend.  Holly reported that a meeting would be held soon to develop a process and operation for a planned watch group.  She has 12 volunteers so far.

 

On April 16th the Arizona Democratic Party will have a dinner meeting at the Hotel Tucson City Center featuring Sheriff  Dupnik as principal speaker.

 

On April 17th there will be a Health Care Forum about the Affordable Care Act  at the Desert View  Theater.

Program Committee:

Harriet Hason introduced our speaker, David Safier, a retired teacher who taught for over 30 years in public high schools in the Portland, Oregon area.  Currently Mr. Safier writes  a blog about education and politics, and he is a columnist for The Explorer.  He spoke about the limited funding our state allots to education while producing below average results in math and reading.  He also emphasized that charter and private schools overall do not perform better than public schools.  Mr. Safier then took audience questions.

 

Next Holly Lyons announced the winners of the recent drawing for people who filled out the survey at our website.   Elissa Hauptman and Allen and Margaret Kientz.

 

The meeting adjourned at 6 p.m.

 

Next meeting is Tuesday, May 17th, 4-6p.mp, Saddlebrooke Activity Center featuring  Andrei Cherny and others followed by an ice cream social.

SaddleBrooke Democratic Club Minutes

March  8, 2011

1.  The meeting of the SaddleBrooke Democratic Club was called to order by Chair, Holly Lyon at 4:00 pm.

2.  Secretary’s Report:

The Minutes of the February 8 meeting were deferred to the April meeting.

3.  Treasurer’s Report:

Treasurer’s report was given by Vice Chair, Joe Robison.  Our current bank balance is $4,669.42.  Because we have new officers it was announced that the the Chair, Vice Chair, and Treasurer are now on the account.

4.  Committees’ and Officers’ Reports:

Social
Susan Shear, Social Chair, announced the Socials planned as follows:
May 17th–Ice cream social following the speaker
July-Reader’s theater (play and discussion).
Fall-“It’s the Framing Stupid” (understand the art of communication).  Further she would like a larger committee.  Anyone interested should call her.

A member suggested that we have the social calendar on the web site.  Holly is doing that.  There is a calendar now and she is adding an events page which will list socials/events chronologically.

Membership
Carolyn Badger, Membership Chair, announced her committee:  Penelope Flom, Karen Cusano, Mary Britten and Emily Robinson.  We have 26 new members, six of whom were at the meeting.  Discussion followed regarding finding snowbirds in the area who may be Democrats.  She suggested that when we receive our announcement for the April meeting we should forward it to anyone we think might be interested, especially snowbirds.

Vice Chair
Joe Robison announced proposed amendments to the SaddleBrooke Democratic Club By-laws at the February meeting as follows:

1.      Election of officers will be in November of even-numbered years instead of January of odd-numbered years.
2.      The former method of our club dues being due the month one joined has been changed to an annual January-through-December membership for all.

He called for a motion.  M/S/A.

Chair
Holly then made us aware of SB 1540 submitted by Sen. Al Melvin.  It is a proposal that would make it possible for people to knock on our doors to solicit and put up signs in all common areas, contrary to the current CCRs of our community.  Holly had 2,000 flyers printed calling attention to SB 1540 and members took them for distribution in tubes.  Harriet suggested that we have more printed and a collection was taken for incurred expenses.

5.  Program
Harriet introduced our speakers:  Jessica Schultz, Political Director for G. Giffords, who gave us updates on federal and state activity on health care.  Dr. Lorraine Manciet, who practices family medicine in Oro Valley.  Dr. Michael Yim  who runs a clinic for the Oro Valley Hospital.  The two doctors spoke to the administrative difficulties they have with the current Medicare.

SaddleBrooke Democratic Club Membership Meeting

February 8, 2011

Call to Order: The meeting of the SaddleBrooke Democratic Club was called to order by Chair, Holly Lyon  at 4:05 pm.

Approval of Minutes: Secretary Betty Jacob read highlights of the Jan 8th meeting. It was moved, and seconded that the minutes be accepted.  There was no discussion.  Vote was taken and the Minutes were accepted.

Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer, Sue Ayers announced our funding level and that there are no outstanding bills.  Holly Lyon reminded the members that the Steering Committee may authorize expenditure of up to $500.00 between meetings, but must report back to the membership what the expenditures were and for how much.

Social Committee Report: None

Membership Committee Report: We have 246 paid members.

Vice Chair Report: Joe Robison announced proposed changes to the SaddleBrooke Democratic Club By-laws.
1.      Election of officers will be in November of even-numbered years instead of January of odd-numbered years.  This will allow paid members to vote, and the new slate to have some overlap with their predecessors before they take over in January.
2.      The former method of our club dues being due the month one joined has been changed to an annual January-through-December membership for all.  It will make it easier to know paid members who may vote for officers, and everyone will know when dues are coming due.
Joe also announced that he has a full complement of Precinct Committee people for Precinct 8 but there are openings in Precinct 15—West of Desert Bluff.
Programs Committee Report: Harriet, Program Chair, announced there were good and interesting comments submitted from the break-out groups at our January meeting and the monthly programs will be based on those comments.  She and her committee plan to provide meetings with information, support the candidates and have fun.   She had large signs posted in the room so members could sign up for  activities they would be interested in:
Discussion groups in addition to the monthly club meeting, political games, political theme plays, outreach opportunities, progressive dinners.

Chair’s Report: Holly reported on the status of our web site.  She is preparing a “member sign-on area” so members only will be able to access certain information on the web site.
