Outgoing Republican Rep. Tom Davis had some foreboding words for his own party Friday.
“I will readily concede you’re going to see an election where we’re going to lose double-digit seats in the House,” he said.
Davis, who formerly led the National Republican Campaign Committee, spoke to reporters about the Election Day congressional forecast alongside Rep. Chris Van Hollen, head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
Davis warned that the environment simply “isn’t healthy” for the party that holds the White House.
Hollen, likewise, said he’s confident Democrats will pick up a “significant number of seats.”
Hollen, a Maryland congressman, said because of the large number of “tossup races” he wouldn’t make any bold predictions, but he said he hoped first-time voters coming out for Obama would “stay in the ballot booth long enough” to elect Democrats to Congress down the ballot.
Davis, from Virginia, said there were a number of “bright spots” for the Republicans, noting that some Democrats are vulnerable.
“Three and a half weeks is an eternity in this business,” he said, but “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a year where we’ve been so out-resourced.”
